Southwest Georgia Technical College is holding an informational fair for people interested in going to college but do not know where to start. The fair is Monday and is open to the public. The event is being called “Tech My Future” and will highlight how technical education can lead to better marketability, higher wages, and more job opportunities.

“We have planned this event for the community,” said Joyce Halstead, vice president of student affairs. “We want to showcase what the college has to offer for those who are seeking pathways to better careers, better pay, and brighter futures.”

“There are many people who are thinking of furthering their education, but perhaps may not be aware of all that SWGTC has to offer,” said SWGTC president Dr. Glenn Deibert. “This fair will shed some light on how to apply, be tested, and enroll in a program, as well as how to apply for financial aid. We’ll also cover ways to help after enrollment through the many services SWGTC provides on campus to our students.

The event will include workshops on the admissions process, financial aid and an overview of programs available at SWGTC. “These workshops are designed to answer any questions that people may have about how to apply, how to get financial aid, and what programs we have to offer,” said Halstead.

Participants can attend all three workshops in a rotation format. There will be breaks in between each session and refreshments will be provided. Tours of the campus will also be given throughout the day, which will allow participants to get a first hand-look at some of the programs offered and the facilities and equipment in various departments. There will be question and answer sessions at the end of each workshop.

Mike Rayburn, director of financial aid, will be presenting the information on grants, loans, the HOPE Scholarship, and steps to applying for them. The SWGTC Foundation also provides several scholarships and information on how to apply for those will also be made available. “Even if students are not planning to attend SWGTC, this is a great opportunity to learn about the financial aid process, no matter where your educational pursuits may lead you,” said Rayburn.“

“We want this event to be convenient for everyone, so we are having day and evening sessions,” Halstead said. “The morning session will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the evening session begins at 6. We knew that we needed to offer flexibility to potential students so they can plan around their work and school schedules.”

Marcus Nicolas, recruiter, will address each group, providing information on the college’s programs. He will highlight SWGTC programs to these potential students so can make informed decisions on their future program of study.
