THOMASVILLE — Warner’s Slimwear, a manufacturer of women’s undergarments, has unhooked several employees from its payroll.
During a meeting Tuesday morning all but 55 of the 270 current employees were given packets detailing their final day of employment.
“The workforce reduction in Thomasville is a reflection of the business strategy to improve cost structure and compete more effectively in an economic and retail environment,” said Doug Morris, national corporate spokesperson of Warnaco, parent company of Warner’s.
Many employees, some of whom have dedicated more than a decade to the company, received September and November discharge dates.
“A number of criteria was used to determine who was going to be dismissed,” Morris said.
Currently Warner’s has a facility at 2125 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which began 54 years ago. There is also a second location at 105 Genesis Parkway that opened six years ago. Towards the end of this year the Genesis branch will close completely.
“The Genesis building will close at some point in the fourth quarter of this year,” the spokesman continued.
The company is working on severance packages, but details are not being released at this time. Warner’s is in contact with the Georgia Department of Labor Thomasville Career Center in hopes of helping those released find employment.
“We are working closely with state and local agencies that have resources to train and assist these people in the transition,” Morris concluded.
