Thomasville Utilities’ Electric Department recently completed an enlightening project at the Thomasville High School tennis courts.
The old lighting, besides being an eyesore, was inefficient, out-of-date and required a large amount of maintenance. Numerous wooden poles and a web of overhead wiring were replaced with new underground electric lines and more attractive, long-lasting concrete utility poles.
“Not only does the lighting design provide a much more efficient lighting pattern, it also affords significant energy savings,” said Bruce Whittington, Thomasville Utilities’ director of Electric Operations. Whittington estimates the new lighting will save about $7,000 per year in energy costs.
Thirty-two tungsten 1,500-watt lights and 10 35-foot wooden poles were replaced with 16 metal halide 1,500-watt lights and six 57-foot concrete poles.
“This was a large and challenging project, but the results were worth the effort,” stated Whittington.
