Rape suspect indicted

THOMASVILLE — A man charged with raping a 12-year-old girl more than three years ago has been indicted by a Thomas County grand jury.
The rape was reported in April 2000, when the girl’s mother discovered her daughter, who has learning disabilities, was pregnant.
Randy Leaks, 41, 732 South St., was indicted on charges of child molestation, rape and statutory rape in the case.
“She had the baby in November of 2000,” Thomasville police Sgt. Rachelle Denmark said.
A blood sample was taken from the girl, along with swabs from the baby’s mouth, as DNA samples to be used in a paternity test when a suspect surfaced. Denmark received an anonymous tip that Leaks was the father.
Meanwhile, the detective said, Leaks signed legal documents in May 2002 that showed he was the child’s father. The documents, filed in Thomas County Superior Court, showed Leaks would support the child until age 18.
Police then obtained a search warrant for a blood sample from Leaks.
“It matched,” Denmark explained.
Leaks was arrested July 22, 2002, and released on a $15,000 bond four days later.
On Monday, he was arrested in State Court of Thomas County and charged with probation violation. The suspect was in State Court on a charge of theft by receiving stolen property.
Leaks, who is being held in the Thomas County Jail, was charged with entering auto in April 2001, probation violation in November 2001 and failure to appear in 2002.
The rape victim and her child live with the girl’s mother.
“The child has a child,” the detective said. “The mother’s raising both of them. … She’s happy there’s closure to this, that the DNAs match, that she knows who her grandson’s father is.”
