William Lowe Sheftall Jr.

Graveside services for William Lowe Sheftall Jr., 83, Columbus, were at 11 a.m., Monday, June 6, 2005 at Riverside Cemetery, Macon. The Rev. Gordon K. Reed of Christ Church, Presbyterian, Augusta, officiating. Mr. Sheftall died at his home in Columbus Saturday, June 4. He was the father of William Lowe Sheftall Jr. (III) of Thomasville. Mr. Sheftall was born in Macon on April 6, 1922, the only child of Anna LaFae Fargason and William Lowe Sheftall. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, volunteered for service in the Army Air Corps and flew 74 missions as a fighter pilot stationed in Italy for 17 months during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart, and honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of first lieutenant. He attended Vanderbilt University and its School of Law, from which he received his J.D. degree in 1950. He married the former Josephine Banks McKay in Macon on April 3, 1951. The Sheftalls made their home in Macon for almost 40 years, where he was active in the business community, retiring in 1992 as vice-president of Murphey, Taylor and Ellis and manager of its insurance department. The Sheftalls moved to Columbus in 1996 and have since made their home at The Cedars, Mrs. Sheftall’s ancestral home. His paternal ancestors participated in the founding of Georgia in 1733, and he held membership in the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia as the representative of Col. Mordecai Sheftall, Deputy Commissary General for Issues in Georgia during the American Revolution. His other memberships included the Georgia Historical Society, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, Historic Macon Foundation, Historic Columbus Foundation, the Macon Civic Club, the Georgia Association of Independent Insurance Agents (of which he was a past president), Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and First Presbyterian Church in Macon of which he was a former Sunday school teacher, deacon, ruling elder, and clerk of the session. In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by a son, William Lowe Sheftall Jr. (III), and his wife, Carol Harden Sheftall, of Thomasville; a son, John McKay Sheftall, and his wife, Lucy Tresp Sheftall of Columbus; four grandchildren, William Lowe Sheftall IV, Lucy Banks Sheftall, John McKay Sheftall Jr., and Andrew Tresp Sheftall; and a step-granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Dyke of Atlanta. Charles Worthey

Services for Charles Worthey are at 3 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at Shirley Hills Baptist Church. The Rev. Andy Cook, the Rev. Napp Granade and the Rev. Sydney will officiate and interment is in Parkway Memorial Gardens. Mr. Worthey died Sunday, June 5. Born Feb. 8, 1928 in Anniston, Ala., he was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Ala. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired as chief of budget after serving 33 years at Robins Air Force Base. He was a charter member of Shirley Hills Baptist Church where he served in many capacities, including chairman of the finance committee and chairman of deacons for many years. He served many years as a deacon and as a Sunday school teacher for over 54 years. He is survived by his wife, Frances Morris Worthey; a daughter, Dawn W. (Ben) Elliott, of Canton; son, C. Mark (Lissa S.) Worthey; and three grandchildren, Kate, Emily Claire and Hampton Worthey of Thomasville; sisters-in-law, Jackie Morris and Helene S. Worthey both of Anniston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Furman and Irma Worthey and a brother, Rayton Worthey.
