Sallie Pearl Abrams

Services for Sallie Pearl Abrams, 79, Thomasville, are at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 435 S. Stevens St., with the Rev. Daniel Smith, the Rev. Sylvester Williams and the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Interment is in Magnolia Cemetery in Thomasville. Active pallbearers are nephews, Thomas Washington Jr., Nathaniel Abrams Jr., Albert Abrams, Clarence Mayo, Samuel Harris and Karl Abrams. Honorary pallbearers are deacons of New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Mrs. Abrams died Jan. 3 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 23, 1924 in Thomas County, she was a daughter of the late Elder Jordan Alexander Abrams and Allie Mae Brown Abrams. She received her bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1949 from Albany State College. She was an educator and taught for 40 years before retiring in 1989. She was a member of the Thomasville City Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the Georgia Education Association. She was also a member of the NAACP. She was a member of New Jerusalem M.B. Church where she was church treasurer. She enjoyed gardening and was known for growing beautiful flowers. She also took great pride in her family and was very knowledgeable about her family history. It gave her great pleasure to attend family reunions around the country. Survivors include her sister, Priscilla Abrams Washington of Thomasville; brother-in-law, Thomas L. Washington Sr. of Thomasville; brother, Lawrence Abrams of Yellow Springs, Ohio; sister-in-law, Josella Abrams of Yellow Springs; nephew, Glenn (Ethel) Abrams; niece, Gladys Tift; nephews, Livingston (Irma) Albritten Sr., Willie (Carolyn) Franklin, Thomas (Alvenus) Washington Jr., Rudy (Carol) Washington, Gloria (Clarence) Mayo, Joyce (Samuel) Harris, Melody (Andre) McCloud, Lawrence (Jackie) Abrams Jr., Sheila Sutton, Andrea (Stuart) Turner, Ostein (Haywood) Truitt, Martin (Amanda) Abrams, Nathaniel Abrams Jr., Albert (Myra) Abrams, Doris (Kenneth) Clark; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by sisters, Annie Ruth Terrell, Lucille Franklin, Allie Mae Barnes, Elvira Kleckley, and brothers, Jordan Abrams Jr., Nathaniel Abrams Sr.; and adopted brother, Leroy Abrams. Chester W. Bennett

Services for Chester W. Bennett, 73, Ochlocknee, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Grady County. The Rev. Mike Nichols and the Rev. Paul Voyles will officiate and interment is in the church cemetery. Mr. Bennett died Jan. 7 in Cairo. He was an avid fisherman, member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and member of American Legion Post No. 122. Survivors include his wife, Irene Bennett of Ochlocknee; a daughter, Paula Mobley of Pensacola, Fla.; son, Thomas Grady Bennett and his wife, Susan, of Ochlocknee; three grandchildren, Jennifer Mobley Sarkadi and husband, Peter, living in Hungary, Thomas Mathieu Bennett of Ochlocknee, John Mobley of Pensacola, Fla.; and one great-grandchild, Hannah Sarkadi. Inez Walden Crew

Services for Inez Walden Crew, 93, Cairo, are at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Clark Funeral Home Chapel in Cairo. Elder Robert Connor and Elder Thad Marshall will officiate and interment is in Godwin Cemetery in Cairo. Active pallbearers are Donald Walden, Tracy Walden, Tom Taylor Jr., Tom Taylor III, Jamie Ledo and Mitchell Frix. Mrs. Crew died Thursday, Jan. 8 in Cairo. Born July 29, 1910 in Cairo, she was a daughter of the late Charles Sylvester and Idella Godwin Walden. She was a descendent of Elder William Hawthorne who was the earliest settler in what is now known as Grady County. On Aug. 16, 1928, she married Leslie William Crew who preceded her in death on May 19, 1990. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed God’s beautiful nature and got much pleasure from creating beautiful flower gardens in her yard. She was a member of Tired Creek Primitive Baptist Church, member of Moonlight Garden Club and volunteered as a Gray Lady at Grady Memorial Hospital. Survivors include daughters, Betty Sue Mitchell, Peggy Crew both of Cairo; grandchildren, Diane Mitchell Taylor of Cairo, Tammy Massey-Ledo of Tallahassee, Fla., Tina Massey Frix of Dalton, Teresa Massey Prince of Cairo; great-grandchildren, Tori Marrett of New Orleans, La., Tom Taylor of Sanford, Fla., Troy Taylor of Cairo, Rafella Ledo, Joseph Ledo both of Tallahassee, Tyler Frix, Trent Frix both of Dalton, Carrie Kesler and Georgia Kesler both of Cairo. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a grandson, Jimmie Leslie Mitchell; a sister, Susie Walden; brothers, Earl Walden, Alton Walden and Jack Walden. Callie A. Evans

Graveside services for Callie A. Evans of Camden, N.J. are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Thomasville. The Rev. Estelle Arrington will officiate. Mrs. Evans died Jan. 2 in Camden. Born in Thomas County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Lewis and Susie Williams Mickens. She attended Allen Normal Elementary and Douglass High School. Mrs. Evans was a member of the Eastern Star for many years and a member of Camden County Community Temple in Camden. She was well-known for lending a helping hand to those who needed her and taking charge of hard situations if needed. Survivors include her son, Jasper Frazier Jr. of Camden; grandsons, Christopher Morris, Rashaad Holliman, Daquan Frazier, Micheal Hollimon, Leonard Sease all of Camden; granddaughters, Meredith Morris, Jasmine Frazier both of Camden; a brother, John Mickens of Camilla; a sister, Emma Pearl Linkhorne of Camden; daughter-in-law, Nadine Hollimon; brothers-in-law, Liston Gerald of Paulsboro, N.J., E.L. Estella Mae Harrell Green

Services for Estella Mae Harrell Green, of Whigham, are at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at First Mt. Pilgrim M.B. Church. The Rev. Elex German, pastor, will officiate. Interment is in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers are Dennis Williams, Earnest Jenkins, Leon Ford, Ronald Stewart, Tyrone Tise, Frankie Bowden, Larry Simmons and Albert Smith. Mrs. Green died Jan. 7 at Archbold Hospital. Born in Grady County, she was the daughter of the late Cleon Harrell and Florine Corker Harrell. She was married to R.L. Green, lived most of her life in Grady County and was a member of First Pilgrim M.B. Church. Survivors include her son, Timothy (Cheryl) Green of Thomasville; granddaughter, Tian Green of Thomasville; sisters, Julia Mae (J.R.) Patten of Cairo, Cenella (James) Teal of Whigham; brothers, Clennon (Ada) Harrell Sr., James (Tammy) Harrell, Raymond (Aradene) Harrell, Cecil (Debra) Harrell all of Whigham; aunts, Minnie (Everett) Thomas of Ft. Emma Conage Jackson

Services for Emma Conage Jackson, 100, of Albany, are at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Morning Star M.B. Church in Meigs. The Rev. Estelle Arrington will officiate and interment is in Sunset Cemetery in Meigs. Mrs. Jackson died Jan. 1 at Palmyra Nursing Home. Born Nov. 2, 1903 in Thomas County, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Sarah R. Conage. She was married to the late Hanson Jackson. She attended Thomas County public schools and was a member of Morning Star M.B. Church. A domestic worker, she resided in Miami, Fla. and Riverview, Fla. before moving to Albany. Survivors include her son, Clarence (Ethel) Jackson of Delray Beach, Fla.; daughters, Annie M. Allen of Miami, Edna Jackson of New Haven, Conn., Emma Green of Riverview, Rean White of Albany; son-in-law, Daniel Fann of Thomasville; daughters-in-law, Rosa L. Jackson of Atlantic City, N.J., Louise Jackson of Meigs; 48 grandchildren; 133 great-grandchildren; 116 great-great-grandchildren; four great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, close relatives and family friends. She was preceded in death by her 10 siblings; a daughter; and four sons. Mrs. Jackson will be on view from noon until the funeral hour Saturday at the church.
