Ernest Hollis

Services for Ernest Hollis, 87, 126 Augusta Ave., Thomasville, are at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Aucilla Missionary Baptist Church, Ga. Hwy. 122, Thomasville. The Rev. W.L. Henry, pastor, and the Rev. Estelle Arrington officiating. Interment is in Aucilla Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Aaron Herring, Elzie James Herring, Boyd Hollis, Brown Hollis III, Edward Brinson and Herbert Brinson Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Moses Brown Jr., Alfred McCray, Wesley Hollis, Herman McCray Sr., Everette Lee Herring and Mitchell Hollis. Mr. Hollis died April 14 at Archbold Medical Center. Born May 9, 1916 in Thomas County, he was a son of the late Brown and Lula Hollis. He was married to the late Eliza Nelms. He was a farmer then a carpenter’s aide at Southwestern State Hospital and grounds caretaker. He lived in Thomasville for 39 years after moving from Pavo. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Mitchell of Thomasville; son-in-law, Henry Mitchell of Thomasville; granddaughter, Angela Keys of Thomasville; brothers, Brown Hollis II of Thomasville, Eddie Hollis of Sanford, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. The viewing is 3 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The funeral procession will assemble at 2:15 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home. — Hadley’s Funeral Home



Ellis Laverne Maxwell

Services for Ellis Laverne Maxwell, 89, of Cairo, are at 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2004 at Clark Funeral Home Chapel in Cairo. The Rev. Dr. Ron McCaskill and the Rev. Kenneth L. West will officiate and interment is in Tired Creek Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Robert Harrison, Royce Rackley, Carroll Hopkins, Tommy Hopkins, Lee Russell, Carl Minter Jr., Bobby Williams and Jimmy Green. Honorary pallbearers are Royce Rackley, Luther Ausburn, Roger Murphy, Holmes Maxwell, Bobby Johnson, Donald Walden, Ira Lee Jr., Leroy Hopkins Jr., Tom Hopkins, Clint Miller, Duane Hopkins, Dr. Ronald Spooner, Dr. Gene Maddox, Winfred Robinson and Willard Hinton. Mr. Maxwell died Wednesday, April 14 at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville. Born June 23, 1914 in Grady County, he was a son of the late John Emory and Carrie Gainey Maxwell. On Dec. 9, 1937, he married Elmera Jane Lee Maxwell of Cairo. Mr. Maxwell was an avid outdoorsman. He farmed, tenderly caring for the land where he was born. He was a member of the Reno Senior Citizens Organization and Bethel United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Elmera Jane Lee Maxwell of Cairo; daughter, Betty M. Phelps and son-in-law, Dr. Dewey Phelps of Cairo; grandson, Heath Maxwell Phelps of Valdosta; step-granddaughter, Angela Phelps Robinson and husband, Dr. Robi Robinson of Amelia, Va.; step-great-grandchildren, Barak Robinson, Nathan Robinson, Abigail Robinson all of Amelia; nieces and nephews, Shirley Maxwell Gale and husband, Kenneth Gale, Jackie and Jimmy Lewis Maxwell all of Cairo, Arthur Reynolds Maxwell of Houston, Texas, Billy Emory and Kay Maxwell of Lincoln, Neb., Walter Gainey and Marguerite Maxwell of Cairo; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Maurice and Bill Connell of Cairo, Burma and L.B. Connell of Edison, Martha and Buryl Harrison of Climax; nieces and nephews, Brenda and Wayne Clotfelter of Tallahassee, Fla., Mary Ellen and Steve Morrissey of Wichita, Kansas, Julia Ann Algiere of Cairo, Linda and Keith Harrison of Climax, Elaine and Winston Moore of Climax, William Berry Connell of Louisiana and Lafaye Connell Kihley of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his father, John Emory Maxwell; mother, Carrie Gainey Maxwell; brothers, Jesse Howard Maxwell, John Emory Maxwell, William Cory Maxwell; and a sister, Lois Elizabeth Maxwell. Albertgene Peoples

Services for Albertgene Peoples, 56, 1385 Pope Rd., Boston, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Bell Mission Church of God in Unity, Ga. Hwy. 122 Pavo Rd. Elder Leroy James, pastor, and Bishop Frankie Brinson officiating. Interment is in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Willie James Reddick, Herman Reddick, Herbert Brinson Jr., Edward Brinson, Michael Reddick and Tommy Brinson. Mrs. Peoples died April 10 at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville. Born March 31, 1948 in Thomas County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Mamie Brinson. She was married to Willie Peoples who survives. She attended Coolidge School, was a personal caretaker and joined Cedar Hill Baptist Church at an early age. Survivors include sisters, Rosetta Jackson (Ira, deceased), Pearline Revels (Frank, deceased), Nadine Reddick (Walter, deceased) all of Boston; brothers, Herbert Brinson, Edder Brinson (Mary Ann) all of Boston, Kelly Brinson (Ida, deceased) of Valdosta; sister, Louise Wallace (Paul) of Hopkinsville, Ky.; brother, Andrew James (Mary) of Aiken, S.C.; aunt, Evelyn Hadley of Greenville, Fla.; godson, Boddrick S. Johnson of Coolidge; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Brinson (Willie Arthur) of St. Petersburg, Fla. Pastor Addie Walker, officiating, and interment is in Meigs Sunset Cemetery in Meigs. Active pallbearers are Terry James, Charles Freeman, Cleve Walker, Johnny Cooksey, Terrence Bostick and Dearean Clayton. Mrs. Smith died April 9 at Archbold Medical Center. Born Dec. 24, 1973 in Thomasville, she was a daughter of Gloria Williams and Charlie Freeman Sr. She was married to Jeffrey G. Smith Sr. She attended Thomas County Central High School and was a member of Immanuel Temple Church of God in Christ. She was a manager at Church’s Chicken in Thomasville. Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey G. Smith Sr. of Ochlocknee; daughter, Jessica Burdon of Ochlocknee; sons, Isaac Burdon Jr., Jeffrey Smith Jr. both of Ochlocknee; mother, Gloria Williams of Meigs; father, Charlie Freeman Sr. of Meigs; mother-in-law, Wessie Smith of Moultrie; brother, Charlie J.
