THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society is preparing for the protection of pets during a disaster by planning ahead and forming volunteer committees.
The second meeting of the pet disaster committees will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the animal shelter and several volunteers are still needed for the security, general information, intake, supplies and boarding teams.
“Our goal is to get everything organized, planned out and on paper. Once in place, when there is a disaster, the Humane Association of Georgia will send over a van with supplies. We are trying to get enough volunteers so that they can relieve one another and no one is there for an extended period of time,” said Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society Executive Director Pat Smith. “The reason we are doing this is because so many people have animals, and during an emergency, they either stay home and risk the disaster or go to places like Wal-Mart parking lot and stay.”
