Graveside services for Charles Christopher CoCroft, Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 at Laurel Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Milton C. Gardner officiating. Mr. CoCroft died Sept. 22 and he had been living in Atlanta with his daughter. He was born April 1, 1910 in Thomasville. He attended Mercer University and upon graduating in 1932, took over his family business CoCroft Music Company, which he sold in 2000. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Thomasville, Thomasville Rotary Club, Duck Haven Gun Club and the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation. Additionally, he was a former director of Thomas County Federal Savings and Loan. He was an avid rose cultivator, and along with his wife Katie, participated and supported the Thomasville Rose Show for many years. He will be remembered for his cheerfulness, courageous spirit and strong faith in God. He was the son of the former Christopher Columbus CoCroft and Ellen Weldon CoCroft. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Catherine Crosby CoCroft and a son, Charles Christopher CoCroft Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine CoCroft Maier of Atlanta; and a grandson Frank Maier III of Bozeman, Mont. He is also survived by grandson, Christopher CoCroft Maier and his wife Lisa Curlee Maier as well as a great-granddaughter, Grayson Rowland Maier. James Higgins Hawthorn

Services for James Higgins Hawthorn, 77, Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at Laurel Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Charles M. “Chuck” Bennett officiating. Mr. Hawthorn died Monday, Sept. 24 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. Born Oct. 26, 1923 in Thomasville, he was the son of the late Reginald Hawthorn and the late Sara Agnes Higgins. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Houston Flautt of Thomasville; niece and nephew, Bobby and Carolyn Overmier of Thomasville; niece and nephew, Sally and Mike Gainey of Lexington, Ky.; relative, Jane Langford; and friends, J.T. and Connie Turner of Thomasville. — Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home



Jesse Wayne Player

Graveside services for Jesse Wayne Player, Thomasville, are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at Ochlocknee City Cemetery with the Rev. Vernon Fletcher officiating. Mr. Player died Saturday, Sept. 22 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born June 26, 1947 in Thomas County, he was the son of the late Eddie J. Player and the late Christine Parker Player. He was a dredger. Survivors include a brother, Virgil Player of Thomasville; a sister, Shirley Walker of Orlando, Fla.; a great-aunt, Maude Tucker of Thomasville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Sadie Crosby Pope

Graveside services for Sadie Crosby Pope, 79, Pelham, are at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville. The Rev. George Durham will officiate. Mrs. Pope died Sept. 22 in Columbus. Born Feb. 27, 1922 in Hamilton County, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Edie Dyess Crosby and the late Warren V. Crosby. She was married to the late Emory C. Pope. Mrs. Pope was a member of Hand Memorial United Methodist Church and a homemaker. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Judy Pope of Columbus; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Dement of Thomasville, Ala.; four grandchildren, Pamela Pope of Columbus, David Pope of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Cynthia Pope of Thomasville, Ala., Walt Pope of Coffeeville, Ala.; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Maud Hulett of Quitman, Coye Hall of Jennings, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Melvin Pope of Tallahassee, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. — Braswell Funeral Home



Ella Goldberg Rosenberg

Ella Goldberg Rosenberg died Sept. 23, 2001. Mrs. Rosenberg was born Jan. 6, 1905 in Thomasville and was the daughter of Mr. a





nd Mrs. Joseph Goldberg who came to Thomasville in the late 1800s. She married Herman “Buster” Rosenberg who predeceased her in 1997. She attended East Side School now the Cultural Center and was a member of B’nai Israel Synagogue. She received the Thomasville Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1999 and was named Community Champion. She enjoyed a lifetime interest in art and gardening. She was a Master Judge of the Killarney Queen Garden Club-Art Guild. After years of winning many awards, she received a last Blue Ribbon at the Thomasville Rose Show in 2000. She is survived by her nieces, Maxine Stone of Manhasset, N.Y.; Deane Smigrod of Greensboro, N.C.; Janet Lewis Fox of Columbia, Maryland; and her nephew, Mark Rosenberg of Paris, France. The funeral was held Sept. 23. Betty Lois Newton Salter

Services for Betty Lois Newton Salter, 70, Norman Park, are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, on the Adel Highway, with the Revs. Ronald Barrett and Preston Norman officiating. Interment is in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Dr. Dave Adcock, Dr. Thomas L. Estes, Dr. Michael Haney, Dr. Clyde Lamon, Dr. Gary C. Lodge and Dr. John Stewart Newton. Mrs. Salter died Sunday, Sept. 23 at her residence. Born April 16, 1931, in Bibb County, Macon, Ga., she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Newton and Laura Isobell Stallings Newton. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she enjoyed serving in many different capacities. She worked as a telephone operator at the phone company, worked in many different job descriptions at G.C. Murphy Company and enjoyed serving many years in the nursing profession during which time she was honored as Employee of the Year at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. She attended Norman Park High School, Moultrie Area Vocational Technical School and was honored as the area GOAL winner. She received an associate in arts degree from Albany Junior College, and a bachelor of science in nursing from Albany State College. A highlight of her life was becoming a registered professional nurse. Her favorite hobbies were gardening, genealogy and supporting the work of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, James Newton (Jimmie) Salter. Survivors include her husband, Homer Seal Salter; daughters, Ona Lois Salter Benton and husband Charles of Ochlocknee, Laura Pamela Salter Sullivan of Tampa, Fla.; and two grandsons, Clayton Newton Sullivan and Andrew James Sullivan. Graveside services for Blanch Smith, 90, Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Charlie III Dunbar officiating. Active pallbearers are friends of the family. Mrs. Smith died Sept. 23 in Thomasville. Born in Thomas County, Ga., she was a lifetime resident and a member of Mt. Pilgrim M.B. Church.
