THOMASVILLE — Hannah Barfield, 16, added another crown to her collection on Saturday night when she won the Teen Miss Southwest Georgia pageant in Leesburg.

“I was on, and I was happy,” she said. “Things going smoothly puts me in a good mood and makes me want to win.”

Categories were interview (40 percent), talent (30 percent), evening gown (10 percent), on-stage question (10 percent) and composite (10 percent).

Barfield sang “Broadway Baby” for her talent. The surprise of the pageant came when she arrived and discovered that a girl in the “Miss” pageant was wearing the same dress she had.

Luckily, the girls knew each other.

“We just made a joke out of it,” said Barfield.

Although neither had another dress to wear, both won their division and Barfield’s mother, Martha, has a snapshot of the two girls in their matching dresses and crowns.

Barfield recently competed in the Miss Camilla pageant but said she was not on that night.

“I got a little discouraged,” she said. “I was not having a good night.”

However, after assessing the situation, Barfield got over her disappointment and kept going.

“With a little effort, I guess you can do anything,” she said.

Along with encouragement from her family and friends, Barfield also received much-needed inspiration from her Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe director and mentor, Fred Allen.

“He said ‘go and win girl’,” she said.

Barfield is the reigning Teen Miss Georgia Cotton and was first runner-up at the Teen Miss Georgia pageant in June.

Teen Miss Southwest Georgia is a preliminary to the Teen Miss Georgia pageant. Barfield is excited about returning to the pageant in 2005.

“I’m going to work even harder this year because I am going to win,” she said. “Everybody had better bring it.”

However, Barfield does plan to take the rest of 2004 off and enjoy the holiday season before jumping back into pageant preparations.

She is also the current Teen Miss Thomasville but will relinquish her crown on Jan. 8, 2005.
