THOMASVILLE —
After a Wednesday proceeding in Atlanta, a Grady County judge charged with judicial misconduct settled with the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC).
J. William Bass Sr., Grady County State Court judge, settled with the JQC after an all-day proceeding.
Bass will be suspended for two months without pay, receive a public reprimand, cannot seek re-election at the end of his current term and is on probation until the end of the term.
The JQC in December 2012 alleged 13 violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct against Bass.
The JQC can enter an agreement with a judge at any point in a trial, said Jeff Davis, JQC director. A resolution, as the one reached in the Bass case, attempted to weigh the balance, protect the public and gave Bass an opportunity to modify behavior that led to the charges, he added.
“He’s on probation through the end of his term,” Davis explained
If bass retaliates against anyone, he is subject to be brought back before the JQC on 10 days notice.
“If the commission finds he has engaged in retaliation, they can order additional sanctions, which could be suspension or removal,” Davis said.
In accepting the JQC’s Wednesday decision, Bass waived an appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court if the commission moved to oust him.
