Singletary Oncology Center to host Reach to Recovery training

THOMASVILLE — When a woman first learns she has breast cancer, she may feel overwhelmed or alone. And in addition to coping with her new diagnoses, she’s also faced with learning about available medical treatment options, and then choosing the best one for her.

But patients should know they’re not alone.

Archbold’s Reach to Recovery program offers patients one-on-one support to help them cope emotionally with a breast cancer diagnosis and provide support to them as they consider treatment options.

“Archbold Memorial Hospital’s Reach to Recovery is a great program, offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, that matches a breast cancer survivor with a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient,” said Debbie Beeson, breast navigator at the Singletary Oncology Center. “The survivors are trained volunteers. They’ve been through the same journey the newly diagnosed patient is beginning, and they can provide much needed support and offer advice first-hand based on their experiences.”

Beeson said patients are matched with survivors based on personal interests, age and their diagnosis.

“We want our patients and survivors to have a very good experience,” added Bill Tustin, administrator of the Singletary Oncology Center. “We want them to be comfortable talking about their concerns, so we are very careful to match them with someone with a similar background.”

Archbold’s Singletary Oncology Center will host a training session for new Reach to Recovery volunteers on Saturday, March 30. Those interested in becoming a program volunteer should be a breast cancer survivor, and at minimum, one year post-treatment.

For more information, contact Beeson at (229) 584-5445 or dmbeeson@archbold.org.
