THOMASVILLE —
A little-known panel established by Thomas County commissioners eight years ago is about to be revamped.
The five-member Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society Animal Control Board was established in 2005 to hear appeals of owners of dogs deemed vicious or dangerous. One board member died, and another moved.
A new board was proposed to commissioners via memo by Pat Smith, Thomas County animal control director, and Edward Williams, Humane Society executive director.
Smith’s and Williams’ names were on the submitted list, along with three incumbent panel members and two individuals to replace board members who died or moved. Smith told commissioners Tuesday proposed members are involved in the community and with animals.
Commission Vice Chairman Moses Gross said animal control board openings should be advertised like other commission-appointed positions.
Gross questioned why Smith and Williams should be board members since they would be involved because of their work. Those positions could be available for other citizens, he said.
