Troupe sets January auditions for performers

THOMASVILLE —

The Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe will hold January auditions for prospective members who have not previously been a part of the ensemble of teenaged entertainers.

Troupe officials said the group, building on the excitement of its December 22nd holiday performance at the White House and a successful Christmas show earlier in December, will soon begin rehearsals and preparations for its 2013 Spring Show, the organization’s 40th annual Mother’s Day Weekend production. A membership deadline of January 31st has been set for participation in the remainder of the 2012-13 training and performance year.

“Again this year, we’ve had a good deal of interest expressed by students and parents, and our past mid-year auditions have resulted in some outstanding members,” explained Troupe President Carolyn Betters. “For these reasons, we will consider mid-year additions again this year, and, as we announced in the fall, these auditions will be limited to new members, not previous members wishing to return.”

“Students are expected to make a long-term commitment to membership, as leaves of absence and breaks in membership are strongly discouraged,” she added. “We are working to build a team of committed and dedicated student performers who learn and work together over time to prepare to showcase their talents.”

Betters said the Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe has been a south Georgia tradition since founder Fred Allen created the group of teenaged entertainers in 1972.

Now under the direction of Raymond Hughes, the group numbers some 100 students in grades seven through twelve, representing public and private schools from five southwest Georgia counties. Hughes and assistant director Stephanie Hart will be auditioning potential members by appointment only throughout January, and the group seeks a diverse membership.

“The Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe respects and recognizes the importance and the tradition of the audition process, but that process need not be an intimidating one,” explained Hughes. “Troupe is a learning experience as well as a performing experience, so we welcome students of all talent and training levels.”

Hughes said some Troupe members come to the table with years of music, voice, dance or drama training, while others have little prior performing arts experience or exposure. The audition, he said, is an opportunity for the artistic team to get to know potential members better and for placement purposes.

“We are an inclusive, rather than exclusive, performing arts training program, and that’s very important to Troupe’s mission,” added Hughes.
