THOMASVILLE —
A Cairo granddad now has thousands of ways to ring in 2013 with a win from the Georgia Lottery.
Terry Ferrell, 57, is one of two players each to win $244,720 from matching all five winning numbers from the Jan. 1 Fantasy 5 drawing.
Ferrell claimed his prize Wednesday at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Tifton.
The grandfather of two selected his own winning combination and purchased his ticket at One Convenient Stop #0003, 130 Highway 93 S. in Cairo. The second jackpot winning ticket was sold in Austell.
Winning numbers from the Jan. 1 Fantasy 5 drawing were: 13-24-27-28-39.
“What a way to start out the New Year,” Ferrell exclaimed, upon discovering his good fortune.
The lucky winner called the Georgia Lottery’s Player Information Hot Line for the results.
“I was shocked, relieved and excited,” he said.
In addition to his two grandchildren, Ferrell has four adult children. He intends to share a portion of the prize with his family.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.8 billion to the for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go toward specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program.
More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
