THOMASVILLE —
Andy Wurst, Meigs mayor, resigned during a Monday city council meeting.
Wurst, who turned his keys in at city hall early Tuesday morning, said he is moving outside the city limits, according to Renee Boyd, a city hall employee.
Wurst could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
“It was unexpected,” Mayor Pro Tem Cynthia Chaney said. “We had no forewarning.”
Chaney said December is being looked at for a special election to elect a new mayor. Chaney said Wurst has purchased property and plans to move outside the Meigs corporate city limits.
Al Ryan, who lives at Riverwind subdivision near Meigs, told Thomas County commissioners last week he understands the City of Meigs is about $100,000 in debt and might not be able to remain a chartered city.
Quite a few smaller municipalities are dealing with the bad economy, Chaney said last week.
“We’re doing the best we can,” she explained.
The mayor pro tem said the Meigs charter remains intact, and there are no plans to disband.
