A REAL LIFESAVER

THOMASVILLE —  Oct. 19 was far from an ordinary day for Shantina Morehead. It was a day that changed her life forever.

Morehead, 31, was getting off of work from a housekeeping job and was driving along Pinetree Boulevard when she saw two women and a baby on the side of the road.

“They were screaming,” Morehead said. “I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know what it was.”

Morehead was correct. Something was very wrong. The three-week-old newborn baby was having trouble breathing.

Morehead pulled her car over to the side of the road.

“Mostly everyone who had pulled over were just standing there and looking,” Morehead said. “One guy was trying to call 911, so I walked over to the woman holding the baby, and I took the baby from her.”

Morehead started breathing for the baby.

“She wasn’t breathing like she should be breathing,” Morehead said. “She wasn’t taking as many breaths as a newborn baby should be taking. I didn’t want her to start to turn a different color.”

Minutes before, the three-week-old newborn started having trouble.

Every time, the newborn was supposed to take a breath, Morehead took one for her.

“She would cry, but then she would start back over again not breathing,” Morehead said. “It was like a cycle. I just kept hearing the younger woman say, ‘Do something! Help my baby!’”
