Young local golfers on top of their game

THOMASVILLE — Harris English isn’t the only Thomasville area golfer worth keeping an eye on.

Karson Stone, 15, and Sam Barrett, 11, were named the Player of the Year in their age groups at the Red Hills Junior Golf Tour at Glen Arven Country Club on Oct. 27.

This was Stone’s third time winning player-of-the year honors. She shot 74 to seal her victory.

Stone is a freshmen at the Scholars Academy where she enjoys drawing and cheerleading when she isn’t out on the links. She already has a plan for her future.

“‘Plan “A” is to play golf in college, but if that doesn’t work out, I want to get a medical degree,’” she said.

Stone started playing golf when she was 8. Her dad, Hank, taught her the game. She proceeded to play in tournaments.

“I like golf because every time you play it is different,” she said. “No shot is ever the same. You have to be consistent. To me, golf is fun and challenging.”

Eleven-year-old Barrett became Player of the Year in his age group by winning a four-hole sudden-death playoff.
