THOMASVILLE —
A passerby at a crime scene spots the potential perpetrator in the crowd of bystanders. To approach a police officer to relay suspicions could reveal the tipster’s identity.
Thomasville Police Department (TPD), with help from technology, has devised a system in which someone can text a tip anytime, anywhere.
The tipster will remain confidential, and a reward from Crimestoppers could result.
To text a tip, text THPD, followed by the message and send to 274637.
Text A Tip is another tool that allows citizens to provide information to police.
“That includes information about the crime, who might have committed the crime, where they live,” said Lt. Eric Hampton, TPD public information officer.
It is hoped Text A Tip will help police at a crime scene realize a potential bad guy is in their midst.
“You don’t have to wait until you get home to make a phone call,” Hampton explained. “You can do it right there.”
Police want the public to feel comfortable providing information.
“Technology is on our side right now,” Hampton explained.
Police already receive quite a few text tips.
“All tips are looked into and investigated,” the officer said.
