THOMASVILLE —
Former state Rep. Dr. Gene Maddox, DVM, and his wife, Patsy, donated $10,000 to the Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) Foundation on Jan. 30. The foundation will use these funds for scholarship development, specifically a new scholarship for students in the Veterinary Technology (Vet Tech) Program.
“We are fortunate to have a Vet Tech Program so close to home. I have been very impressed with Southwest Georgia Technical College and the progress they have made with this new program over the past two years. Seeing that progress and knowing the program director, Dr. Curles, and his potential has made me confident that my donation will support a great cause and great institution,” Maddox said.
This scholarship, which will be named the Maddox Veterinary Technology Scholarship, will assist vet tech students with tuition, books, fees and other school-related expenses.
Maddox, who practiced veterinary medicine locally for more than 50 years, said that veterinary medicine has always been his passion.
He also emphasized the importance of having a supply of well-educated vet techs to work with veterinarians.
He said, “Veterinary medicine has advanced so much in the last few decades and has become so diverse. Today’s veterinarian cannot be successful doing everything alone, making it vital to have the support of a registered veterinary technician. Without that support, veterinarians would not be able to do their job in the most efficient manner.”
Curles is not new to Maddox’s kindness and giving spirit. His first position as a veterinarian was working for Maddox. He said he has always considered Maddox a mentor.
“Dr. Maddox and I have maintained a great relationship over the years as colleagues. I am proud of Dr. Maddox for his service in politics as a great advocate for veterinarians, education, and the people of south Georgia,” Curles said.
He added, “We are truly honored and greatly appreciate that Dr. Maddox has shown faith in our new program with his gracious gift. Due to HOPE cuts and other economic challenges many college students struggle to afford the education they need. Over the years, his donation will more than likely make the difference between a student completing our Program and dropping out due to financial constraints. Therefore, this Scholarship has the potential to touch many students’ lives and for that we are beyond thankful.” cIf you are interested in giving to the Maddox Veterinary Technology Scholarship or have questions about other giving opportunities, call Amy Maison, executive director of Institutional Advancement, Marketing and PR at (229) 225-3977 or email at amaison@southwestgatech.edu.
