THOMASVILLE — Marilyn Manning, a student in the Associate of Science in Nursing Program at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC), has been named SWGTC’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner for 2013. Manning was announced as the winner out of the four finalists at the Feb. 2 Thomasville Kiwanis Club meeting.

“I nominated Marilyn not only for her outstanding academic abilities, but also for the love she has for her patients while in the clinical setting,” Tammy Bryant, SWGTC Associate of Science in Nursing Program Director and Manning’s nominating instructor said. “She is going to be an amazing nurse because she is such a natural healer and truly enjoys caring for others. I am confident she will be a great ambassador for our college, technical education and the nursing profession.”

Manning, a native of Athens, is set to graduate this May.

“I am so honored to have the opportunity to represent Southwest Georgia Technical College, and technical education as a whole, as this year’s GOAL winner,” Manning said. “Technical education is a very viable and practical option when it comes to higher education, and I want to ‘spread the word.’ My mission will be to inform others, especially potential students, how valuable technical education is and how it has impacted my life in a positive manner.”

After 8.5 years working as a trained massage therapist, Manning decided to go to nursing school to deepen her knowledge of the healing process. Upon graduation she wants to pursue a nursing position in either obstetrics or inpatient rehabilitation. Her long-term goal is to get her Master’s Degree in Alternative Medicine so that she can combine her training in massage and nursing to practice a more holistic approach to healthcare.

GOAL, which was established in 1971 by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), is an award that focuses on student excellence in technical education through academic excellence and personal achievement. According to Ellen Terrell, SWGTC GOAL Coordinator, teachers select students based on their leadership skills, academic accomplishments, career goals and personal goals.

The nominees made presentations to a Selection Committee and were evaluated on their leadership abilities, academic achievement, knowledge of technical education, and educational and career goals. Selection committee members for 2013 were Melanie Comerford, Jerry Cox, Nola Daughtery, Robert Dunn and Kathy Megahee, who also chaired the Committee.

After hearing all of the nominees, the Selection Committee chose Manning as this year’s winner.

Manning will represent the College at the regional competition to be hosted at Moultrie Technical College (Tifton Campus) on Feb. 28. All regional winners will compete for the TCSG GOAL Winner title, which will be announced at the GOAL and Rick Perkins Award Ceremony on April 25, in Atlanta.

This TCSG GOAL Winner will serve as the state-wide representative and ambassador of technical education in Georgia for 2013. A new car will also be awarded to the state GOAL winner, who will make appearances throughout the year promoting technical education.

SWGTC offers more than 80 certificate, diploma, and degree programs. Many of these programs provide training for some of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields including Nursing, Automotive Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technology, and Criminal Justice Technology.
