The memories of two local World War II veterans soared with the arrival of piece of history on Monday.
Gene Greenwood, 88, of Monticello, Fla., and Wilburn Gibson, 93, of Thomasville, visited Thomasville Regional Airport Monday to see a sight that they haven’t seen in many years.
Greenwood and Gibson came to see one of the nine B-17s still capable of flying. During World War II, Boeing manufactured more than 12,000 of the bombers, but nearly half were lost in combat.
Greenwood, a former B-17 pilot, bombed German targets 29 times.
