THOMASVILLE —
The Thomas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident at the Oil-Dri Corp. of Georgia Ochlocknee plant that led to the death of a Pennsylvania man.
Lt. Steven Jones, public information officer for the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, said a 63-year-old independent truck driver from Knox, Penn., died Thursday in relation to a private property vehicle accident at the plant.
“The investigation is ongoing but it appears that he died from injuries sustained in the incident,” Jones said.
“At about 10 p.m. Wednesday at a loading dock, an Oil-Dri driver was backing up his trailer to be loaded. Another driver was standing on the ground trying to get the attention of a forklift driver.
“The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old male, could not see the other driver on the ground because he was behind the trailer. The trailer pinned the man against the concrete loading dock and he was crushed.”
The victim was transported to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, and then transferred to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he died Thursday.
Oil-Dri is conducting its own internal investigation, Jones said.
The Times-Enterprise attempted to contact Oil-Dri representatives from both the Ochlocknee plant and corporate offices in Chicago, Ill., but was unable to reach anyone for comment by press time.
