THOMASVILLE —
A woman waiting for her husband at a Thomasville convenience store told police she was forced to a nearby residence and raped.
A police officer was approached at 1 a.m. Sunday by a man who reported the incident, which took place at a house in the 100 block of Victoria Place.
The woman told police she was standing outside the store in the 500 block of West Jackson Street waiting for her husband to pick her up.
“She said she had seen a male pacing back and forth in front of the store,” said Lt. Eric Hampton, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.
Hampton said the man eventually approached the 45-year-old woman from behind and placed a sharp object against her neck.
“He forced her to walk across the street to the residence on Victoria Place, where she was sexually assaulted,” the officer explained.
The incident took place at the home of the suspect, William Eugene Gilbert, 46, 118 Victoria Place, Hampton said.
The person who notified police witnessed the incident and stopped the sexual assault, the officer said.
The woman escaped, and the witness notified police.
Gilbert, who is charged with rape and aggravated assault, was denied bond and remains behind bars at the Thomas County Jail.
