THOMASVILLE —
Archbold CEO Perry Mustian and Archbold President Emeritus James Story, MD, recently joined healthcare leaders from Albany, Moultrie, Tifton and Valdosta to celebrate the official opening of The South Georgia Medical Education and Research Consortium’s (SGMERC) home office in Moultrie.
SGMERC is a partnership among Archbold Memorial Hospital and other hospitals to address the need for primary care physicians in the Southwest Georgia region by collaboratively engaging in the planning and implementation of new and expanded graduate medical education (GME) or residency programs locally. Other stakeholders include the Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center (SOWEGA-AHEC), Community Health Centers and Georgia’s Health Sciences University Medical College of Georgia (GHSU-MCG).
The partnership is expected to improve access to healthcare and will also benefit the local economies, as statistics show physicians who go through medical training and then go into residencies usually stay within a 70 mile radius when establishing their medical practice.
