Scott Rigsby didn’t win the race, but he is still victorious.
In 1986 when Rigsby was 18, he was riding in the back of a trailer after a day of work in Camilla. Rigsby was enjoying the summer day and discussing weekend plans when his life changed forever.
An 18-wheeler attempted to pass Rigsby and his friends, but instead knocked Rigsby off the truck. Over nine seconds, Rigsby was drug for 325 feet.
A broken femur was the least of his injuries. Doctors immediately amputated his right leg below the knee, but salvaged his left leg up to his foot.
One year later, Rigsby had undergone 17 surgeries.
Rigsby spent over a decade undergoing more surgeries, additional amputations, depression and addictions.
But Rigsby did the unthinkable.
On Oct. 13, 2007, he became the first double-amputee on prosthetics to finish an Ironman distance triathlon. He endured the 140.6-mile World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in 16 hours and 43 minutes.
