Board of education adopts resolution against charter school amendment

THOMASVILLE — At a recent meeting, the Thomas County Board of Education unanimously adopted a resolution which “opposes the state’s establishment of a separate system of state-authorized public charter schools.” (A copy of the full resolution is attached.)

The resolutions states in part, “The Thomas County Board of Education believes that quality public education for every child, regardless of heritage or circumstance, is the key to equality, freedom, and the realization of individual potential.”

“Advocates for the constitutional amendment who argue that passage of the amendment would not hurt funding for traditional public education or that it would, in some distorted way, actually help public school funding lack a fundamental understanding of the state budgetary process and the state education funding formula,” said Thomas County Superintendent Dr. Dusty Kornegay.

“The Thomas County School System which operates two charter schools, Bishop Hall Charter School and the PREP Academy, is not opposed to charter schools,” said Kornegay. “However, until the economy improves enough for the state to fund a full year of instruction for students enrolled in our current state school system, we do not feel that the timing is right to start a new system of public schools that will drain resources from traditional public schools.”
