SWGTC business students raise money for non-profits

THOMASVILLE — During summer semester, Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) students enrolled in Management 2215 completed their coursework while raising over $700 for two local charities.

This course, a team-building class required in the Business Management Program, utilizes team methodologies to study the field of management through team projects, leadership role development, etc. For this semester, Neil Clements, Business Management instructor, decided to develop his student’s team-building skills through a community service project.

“I wanted the students to understand that part of being a responsible citizen is giving back to their community. We have many successful companies in Thomasville who support the community wholeheartedly and set a great example of the importance of philanthropy. Through this project, my students learned that part of belonging to a successful company is the community service aspect,” said Clements.

The class was divided into two teams and each team selected a charity to work with. Clements had representatives from the selected charities attend the class and define their needs to the students. The two selected charities were the Scott Senior Center, specifically to benefit it fan drive, and the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society.

“Most of the work for the charities was done outside of the classroom. They had to work together and come up with meeting/event times that accommodated everyone’s schedules. They had to move through the various stages of team development (Storming, Forming, Norming, and Performing) themselves, without any help from me; this was critical because if I had been involved the team would not have been able to function correctly,” commented Clements.

The teams raffled a $100 gas card and also requested donations of new or lightly used fans from the community. Local vendors also donated gift certificates that could be used as part of the raffle.

Clements added, “We had an amazing response from local restaurants, especially considering the short timeframe (summer semester is only about 12 weeks). Richard’s/Henderson’s, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s, Chick-Fil-A, and several other restaurants donated to the students request for help; without their help this project would not have been as successful.”

The students raised $705 to be divided between the two charities, plus an additional 18 fans for the Scott Senior Center. The class also received a donation from the SWGTC Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, a business fraternity, who voted to contribute a portion of the proceeds from their most recent fund-raiser.

SWGTC offers more than 80 certificate, diploma, and degree programs. Many of these programs provide training for some of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields including Nursing, Automotive Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technology, and Emergency Medical Technology.
