THOMASVILLE —
A dog is said to be a man’s best friend. That friendship runs even deeper when that man is a soldier.
Raja Renata Ranch, a non-profit animal rescue in Tennessee, focuses on pulling dogs from shelters and turning them into service dogs for soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries and physical injuries.
In October 2012, Nicole Shifando of Raja Renata Ranch contacted Charlene McCuller, a volunteer rescue coordinator at the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society (TTCHS).
“Nicole had a request from a soldier for a boxer,” said Leigh Ann Falconer, TTCHS board member. “We happened to have a young female boxer at the shelter as well as a young female German shepherd. Nicole asked if we would temperament test them to see if they had the right temperaments to become service dogs. We tested them, and they passed with flying colors.”
