BOND DENIED

THOMASVILLE — Bond was denied Friday for a Thomasville man charged with murder in the Thursday stabbing death of his estranged wife.

William Henry Knight, 56, 517 Remington Ave., Apartment E, is charged with murder in the death of Shirley Knight, 52, 690 Washington Drive, Cairo.

Bond was denied by Thomas County Chief Magistrate Andy Seery in the Jail-Justice Center Courtroom during Knight’s first court appearance Friday afternoon.

A little more than 24 hours earlier, about 1 p.m. Thursday, Thomas County E-911 received a call from a member of the victim’s family about a stabbing possibly in progress at business at 344 E. Jackson St.

Thomasville Fire Rescue and Thomas County Emergency Medical Service used a prying tool to gain entry to look for a victim.

Knight was found facedown on the floor of her business, Knight Services Taxes & Bookkeeping.

She had multiple stab wounds to the front of her body, said Steve Turner, special agent in charge of the Thomasville regional office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Turner declined to say whether a weapon has been recovered.

An autopsy will be performed at a state crime lab to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary autopsy results should be known next week, Turner said.

Police on Thursday said the suspect is the victim’s ex-husband.

However, Grady County clerk of court records show Shirley Knight filed a divorce petition in 2008, but it was dismissed in 2011.

See Saturday's edition for more details.
