Yarn bombers hit downtown

THOMASVILLE —  Something very different will take place downtown today. If you happen to be on Broad Street, you might see some activity in the trees you think is suspicious. Don’t be alarmed. It’s the start of Downtown’s first “yarn bombing.” If you aren’t familiar with the term “yarn bombing,” you aren’t alone. However, the term and the activity are sweeping the nation and making people everywhere marvel at the creative genius behind it.

Simply put, yarn bombing is covering outdoor elements such as trees, buildings or even cars with knitted yarn. This trend is mostly seen in large cities, but it’s coming to downtown Thomasville today.

A team of 75 local yarn bombers, or fiber artists as they are called, are applying their first “bombing” or installation in the trees, on the benches and even on the statues on Broad Street, to kick off the start of Flaunt 2012: Upcycle/Downtown exhibition and art walk.

The team begins its work today, and will continue through the week, leading up to the opening night of the Flaunt exhibition Friday.  Flaunt is presented by Thomasville Center for the Arts in partnership with Downtown Thomasville Mainstreet and Keep Thomas County Beautiful, and brings to the downtown shops and restaurants 28 earth friendly regional artists and their work, creating an art walk and exhibition open to the public.

See Tuesday's edition for more details.
