State Rep. Tony McBrayer, R-Tifton, will not seek re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives.
McBrayer currently represents District 153, which includes Tift and Turner counties. Because of the 2010 census, congressional and legislative district maps were redrawn in August 2011 to reflect the changes in population within the state.
As a result of the process, McBrayer would have to run for re-election in House District 172, which covers a small portion of Tift County, most of Colquitt County and a small area in Thomas County.
“After much prayer and some research of the upcoming race, it became obvious that it would be best for me to forgo election in this new district,” McBrayer said.
“This has been a sad and difficult decision for me, because I love serving the people of my current district as their representative. I thank all of my many supporters for their efforts on my behalf and their encouraging words and prayers throughout my first term,” he added.
McBrayer said he considers public service an honor and looks forward to serving in some future capacity.
“God is clearly closing this door, but He will most assuredly open another one,” McBrayer said.
