CAIRO —
After experiencing a killer tornado on Valentine’s Day 2000, Grady County residents and emergency workers are well aware of the devastation inclement weather is capable of leaving in its wake.
With about 12,000 homes in Grady County at considerable risk for tornado damage or any other act of nature, personnel in emergency support services recognize and have experienced catastrophic damage, said Jim Ellis, Grady County emergency management director.
To address the challenges, Ellis said, the Grady County Emergency Management Agency and City of Cairo Utilities Department encouraged local and state services to collaborate in an exercise for preparedness.
Friday’s Grady County tornado exercise was designed to establish learning and a practical environment for participants to exercise and develop emergency response plans, policies and procedures pertaining to a tornado event in the community.
