THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville Bulldogs boys basketball team is on the verge of history.
Only one teams stands in their way — Greater Atlanta Christian.
The Region 1-AA champs will try to win the school’s first state championship today when they play the Spartans at 4:45 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex.
It is the Bulldogs’ second trip to the championship game in four years. They lost to Dublin 96-84 in 2006.
“It feels real good right now sitting here at the state (title) game, 32 minutes away from being either first or second place in the state,” Thomasville coach Ben Tillman said. “I think that’s awesome for our kids.”
The Bulldogs are 24-4 following Thursday’s 69-43 dismantling of Jefferson in their semifinal matchup. Thomasville will enter this afternoon’s showdown having won six straight.
“It’s just exciting,” Thomasville athletic director Richie Marsh said. “Ben’s done a great job. The kids have played hard.”
Thomasville has won all four of its playoff games by double digits. Thursday’s win was the third time this postseason the Bulldogs have won by at least 20 points.
Greater Atlanta Christian is 31-1 and has won 21 straight. The Spartans are the champions of Region 6.
