MPMS’ Crocker ‘flips’ for education

THOMASVILLE —  Meredith Crocker is a trailblazer of sorts. The third-year Macintyre Park Middle School (MPMS) teacher is trying a new concept known as the “Flip Classroom.

Short on time to teach her sixth-grade science students all she wants, Crocker has adopted the “Flip Classroom” concept where students watch videos that teach the students the lecture at home. In the classroom the following day, students are essentially doing their homework at school.

“The student complete the lecture and notes, and receive direct instruction at home,” Crocker said. “When they get to school, I can work with them. They have opportunities for more hands-on practice, and I can be here to help them with any problems.

“In a normal classroom students receive the lecture while in school and apply the concepts at home. With ‘Flip Classrooms,’ they are doing the lecture at home and practicing in school.”
