America’s great political divide was apparent at the Zebulon Theatre on Wednesday.

U.S Second District Congressman Sanford Bishop and his challenger, John House, had only a few points of agreement during a 90-minute town hall meeting attended by about 50 people and broadcast live by WGRA 790-AM. It was the last face-to-face event for the candidates before Tuesday’s election.
Bishop, a Columbus Democrat who has been endorsed by numerous agricultural interests, touted his congressional experience and ability to steer federal funds to the district as a reason to keep him on the job for an 11th term. His committee assignments include the Committee on Appropriations; Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies; and Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies (ranking member).
During his opening remarks, Bishop said, “I wanted to use the experience, the training and the background that God has blessed me with — when I ran for office — in order to use the political process to improve the lives of the people of the Second Congressional District with jobs, a stronger economy, better education, safe communities free from crime and drugs, a clean environment, affordable and accessible heath care, and a strong national defense within the context of a balanced budget.”agreement during a 90-minute town hall meeting attended by about 50 people and broadcast live by WGRA 790-AM.
