THOMASVILLE —
Thomasville and Thomas County governing bodies have approved a fire services review of Thomasville Fire Rescue and Thomas County Fire Department.
City and county officials said the study will be an unbiased, independent assessment.
The review will be conducted by National Fire Services Office at Sylvania.
Information from the Sylvania company said the evaluation was requested by county commissioners in an effort to “increase operational efficiencies, to maintain or improve Thomas County’s ISO rating, to reduce possible redundancy in fire services and to develop a strategy and plan to achieve these goals.”
Until several years ago, county government contracted with Thomasville Fire Department for fire protection services in an area of unincorporated Thomas County that now makes up primarily county fire districts 1 and 2. Residents of the fire districts, along with Fire District 3, pay extra property taxes for fire services from Thomas County Fire Department, which is staffed by paid and volunteer firefighters.
The county fire department also responds to fires in the county’s six smaller municipalities.
