Archbold's 'PInk Affair' to raise money for mammograms

THOMASVILLE — Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women other than skin cancer and is the second-leading cause of cancer death. About one in eight women will develop the disease in her lifetime.

It also was the most common cancer treated at Archbold Memorial Hospital’s Singletary Oncology Center last year.

But there’s another number that’s more encouraging: About 2.5 million women living now have survived the disease.

On Friday, more than 20 area cancer survivors will take to the catwalk as a living example that there is life after breast cancer in “A Pink Affair,” a cancer survivor benefit fashion show hosted at Archbold’s Lewis Hall Singletary Oncology Center.

The hospital is dedicated to empowering women to make informed decisions about their health. That’s why proceeds from “A Pink Affair” will go to a newly created Archbold Foundation fund to cover the cost for a mammogram for those unable to afford one.

“Breast cancer is easiest to treat when found early and mammograms are a way to achieve early detection,” said Archbold radiologist Mary Anne Bullard, MD. “Thanks to advances in mammography technology, breast cancer survival rates continue to rise, but unfortunately many women still postpone their mammogram for many reasons, including fear of what the screening may find, and for some the financial burden of the screening is also a factor.”

Survivor Susan Knisely, one of the survivors who will model in the fashion show, said. “I’m passionate about raising money and awareness for breast cancer in hopes that my grandchildren and all of my dancers never have to deal with this awful disease.”
