THOMASVILLE —
Raymond Hughes will make his stage debut later this month, appearing in the multi-faceted Narrator/Pangloss/Philosopher role in VSU Opera’s concert production of Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” on the Valdosta State University campus.
An accomplished musician and conductor, Hughes’ long professional career in the world’s premiere theatre and opera companies kept him behind the scenes, including 16 years as chorus master for New York’s renowned Metropolitan Opera.
Hughes, now serving as director of the Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe, said he is delighted to have the opportunity to step on stage in front of the audience for the first time just as his career begins a new focus on the educational side of music and performance.
“I had the great fortune of being molded and taught and mentored by great musicians, artists and teachers over the course of my formative years in Thomasville, during my education at the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina and during the early stages of my career in Germany, South Africa and Italy,” he explained.
“Now, working with this area’s young people through the Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe, I feel I’ve been provided an opportunity to give back, to teach, encourage and mentor the next generation of this area’s budding musicians,” Hughes said. “And, working with the Valdosta State University Opera is an extension of that opportunity as well.”
