Burke wins District 11 Senate race

THOMASVILLE —

The winner of the District 11 state Senate race was at peace Tuesday night.

Dean Burke, a Bainbridge physician, won the Tuesday runoff with 58.42 percent of the vote to 41.58 percent for Mike Keown, a Thomas County Baptist minister.

Both candidates are Republicans.

A total of 13,245 votes were cast in the eight-county election, with 7,738 going to Burke and 5,507 for Keown.

“I felt when I woke up this morning I had done all I could do,” Burke said Tuesday night.

The senator-elect expressed gratitude for the hard work of volunteers and for the confidence shown by those who voted for him.

Burke looks forward to working with District 11 citizens and addressing constituents’ needs.

Keown called Burke Tuesday night and congratulated him on the victory.

“We’re OK with it,” Keown said.

Keown and his supporters were gathering campaign signs Tuesday night. Keown hoped all signs would be removed by this morning.

“I think my time is past, and we’ll turn it over to somebody else,” he said.

In Thomas County, Keown received 61.56 percent of the vote, with 2,127 votes.

Burke received 1,328 votes, 38.44 percent.

Grady County voters cast 1,165 ballots for Keown, 58.96 percent, to 41.04 percent, or 81 votes, for Burke.

John Bulloch, longtime former state senator and Thomas County Republican, resigned unexpectedly from the post in December.

Burke and Keown were among six candidates who sought the Senate seat in a January special election.
