With several Halloween and fall festivals on the horizon, the time is ripe to make a Jack-O’-Lantern! Autumn is such a wonderful time to take advantage of activities specific to the season and spend quality time with those you love by creating memories and strengthening relationships. Plus, it’s always fun to create something with your children, family members and friends. In the days leading up to Halloween and area fall festivals, you can and should incorporate this popular fall activity into your schedule.
Carve a pumpkin! You have no artistic talent, you say? Well, never fear. My name may not be Martha Stewart, but I am more than capable of creating a Jack-O’-Lantern … and so are you! Anyway, I am sure even the former “craftiest gal on cell block C” isn’t as good at everything as she portrays herself to be! So let’s dispel that myth. It does NOT take talent to fashion a Jack-O”-Lantern. It takes tools and an unshakeable determination!
There’s more than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to carve a pumpkin! However, the first thing you’ll need in order to create a Jack-O’-Lantern is a quality pumpkin. Pumpkins are not cheap, and while you may find them on sale, you most likely won’t find any produce coupons to specifically use on them. Your savings for this activity will be realized in the tools and stencils. These items require little to no money on your part, and can be used repeatedly for years to come.
While you may not realize a ton of savings on your pumpkin purchase, choosing the wrong pumpkin will cost you even more money. Let’s face it, trekking back to the store and purchasing a second pumpkin is a waste of gas, money and time. Do your wallet a favor and pick the right pumpkin the first time.
When choosing a pumpkin for a Jack-O’-Lantern, make sure to check that the stem is attached and the bottom of your pumpkin is pretty much level. The last thing most of us want is a pumpkin that severely leans in one direction. You’ll wind up with a Jack-O’-Lantern that looks like he needs a designated driver instead of a front porch to inhabit ... unless that is the look you’re going for ,of course. In that case, get the wackiest one!
