THOMASVILLE —
The Thomasville Community Resource Center (TCRC) is much more than an after-school program. It has already helped two students further their careers.
“In 2011, the Resource Center embarked on an arts and culture initiative in an effort to expand our children’s understanding of human rights, community and global issues,” said Eda Garcia, TCRC executive director. “The experience is designed to teach young people to hone, develop and explore their world through powerful mediums. The goal then is to create a fun environment for learning that will prepare youth to meet challenges through civic engagement and the creative arts. How can youth who are navigating through a challenging world speak their truth while utilizing a creative medium?
“Our program works with children from ages five to 18. We provide academic support and arts education to over 300 children in Thomas and surrounding counties. We are open five days per week delivering a year-round program to address critical education disparities. Children have benefited from the program and are truly reaping the rewards of being exposed to arts and culture.”
Kianna Ross and Trey Garland are TCRC students who have most recently benefited from attending TCRC. Ross has been able to further her dancing career as a company dancer for the South Georgia Performing Arts School of Dance.
“Her favorite thing to do is dance,” said Wendy McCall-Ross, Kianna’s mom. “She also likes to write stories. She is very creative and loves to express herself, but dance is her top thing. When the Resource Center opened up the door and partnered with South Georgia Performing Arts School of Dance for the ‘Step Up’ program, that’s when the opportunity came for Kianna to dance. At that point, everything changed for her. The Resource Center encouraged and had confidence in Kianna. She has been dancing for at least four years. She is now a volunteer with the ‘Step Up’ program helping future dancers. Thanks to the Resource Center, she has been able to do all kinds of things. Kianna took chess lessons, a photography class and so many other things at the Resource Center.”
