Brookwood students honor veterans

THOMASVILLE — On Friday, Brookwood Lower School students, their parents, grandparents and others enjoyed a Veterans Day program presented by 5th-grade students.

Originally called Armistice Day, recognizing veterans from World War I, Veterans Day evolved because that major conflict did not end up being the "war to end all wars." Since World War II began, the day recognizes all veterans.

"The students gave examples of various veterans who had served their country," explained one of their teachers, Terry Howell, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy who served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. "Specifically, they honored the USS Stark that was struck by two Exocet missiles in the Persian Gulf in 1987, where 37 men died."

Under the direction of Barbara Lee, the students sang a medley of patriotic songs, including the songs of the various branches of the U.S. armed forces. When veterans in the audience stood in honor of their branches of the military, they were recognized with enthusiastic applause.

Teacher Marsha Noah coordinated and teacher's assistant Sarah Beeson also helped with the program that was presented later on Friday at the American Legion in Thomasville.
