Lake cruises to Rose City Run victory

THOMASVILLE — Conditions for the 33rd annual Rose City Run were cloudy with rain sprinkled in. They were just right for Chris Lake to cruise to an easy victory in Saturday’s race.

The Tallahassee, Fla., resident led from start to finish and won the 10K race in 32:51.

“I felt pretty good,” Lake said. “I went out too fast, but I tried to hold it. At the end, Heartbreak Hill really lived up to its reputation.”

Lake’s time was 1:13 ahead of Christopher Rice, who finished in 34:04. Daniel Lee finished third in 34:17.

Lake ran the first mile in 5:01 and reached the second-mile marker in 10:22. He never let up, even at mile 5 when his time was posted at 26:16. With the strong race, Lake did have help along the way.

“Probably around mile three was when it was getting real tough,” Lake said. “There was a guy on the bicycle that was just pulling me and pulling me through. I really appreciate his help. He was a big help in talking me and keeping me under control and giving me pointers about the course.”

The top female finisher was Tallahassee, Fla. resident Amy Vines, whose time of 37:42 was 1:18 faster than Sheryl Rosen’s second-place time. It was the first time Vines has participated in the Run and came away very impressed.

“The course was really well mapped. The volunteers are really nice,” Vines said. “They placed the entertainment well. Heartbreak Hill was really fun. It’s pretty amazing to have such a big scale race in a small town.

“I love it. I definitely will come back.”

Lisa Johnson finished third among the females with a time of 39:16.

Thomasville High senior David Daniel was the first competitor from Thomas County to finish. The long-distance runner on the Bulldogs track team finished in 36:21.

“I wanted to run in the 35 (minute-range) but 36 is fine with me,” Daniel said. “It felt good because the sun wasn’t on me and wasn’t keeping me hot. That first mile and a half was easy then that first hill just killed me and I slowed down big time.”

ONE MILE RUN: Because of Saturday’s inclement weather, the One Mile Run was cancelled.
