Second-round showdowns

THS, Central and Brookwood girls still alive in state playoffs

THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville Bulldogs and Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets boys basketball seasons came to an end Wednesday night after losing in the first round of the state basketball tournament.

The Bulldogs were defeated by Bleckley Co. 62-45.

The Bulldogs finished 9-3 in region 1-AA, and 17-10 overall.

Coach Ben Tillman said his team’s record is “great for a rebuilding season.”

The Yellow Jackets lost to Starr’s Mill 65-55. Matt Priest led Central with 12 points, while Deandre Cooksey added 11 points. Austin Bryant and Allen Wade each finished with 8 points.

The Brookwood Warriors lost 58-24 to Loganville Christian School Thursday.

Carter Reed paced Brookwood with eight points. Jake Piazza and Brad Kinni added six points apiece.

The Cairo Syrupmaids won’t be advancing either after losing 64-29 to Jonesboro in the first round of the tournament Wednesday.

But the Thomasville, Central and Brookwood girls are all headed to the second round of the state tournament.

Thomasville hosts Westside-Augusta at 6 p.m. today.

The Bulldogs enjoyed a big 44-27 win against Monticello. But Westside-Augusta is also coming off a big win, beating Jeff Davis 44-32 on Tuesday.

Coach Thomas McAboy and the Bulldogs have made it to the second round of playoffs each of his four years as head coach.

“We got our chance,” McAboy said. “Now we have to go out and compete for 32 minutes. I feel good that we’re at home. Hopefully our fans will come out for us.”

The Yellow Jackets will also play at home against Ware County at 6 p.m. today.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a close 36-33 win Tuesday against Starr’s Mill. Ware County had nearly a 20-point win against Warner Robbins.

Brookwood plays Mount de Sales today at 7 p.m. at Stratford Academy. The Warriors defeated Loganville Christian School on Wednesday 31-30.

Peyton Patterson scored eight points to lead the Warriors to their first-round win. Madeline Eason added six points in the balanced attack with Vallier Smith finishing with five points, and Madeleine Harrer and Christy Quinton each scoring four.
