Freshman impact

Carter playing well with Jackets

THOMASVILLE — A former Thomasville Bulldog is playing a key role in an ACC team's turnaround this year.

A year after finishing 11-20, Georgia Tech was off to a 10-5 start heading into Thursday's showdown at Duke. One of the leaders in the Yellow Jackets' strong start is freshman Robert Carter. Carter is second on the team with 10.1 points per game and was tied for the team lead at 6.5 rebounds. It's an great start for the Shiloh High graduate.

“It's a really big transition going from high school to the best conference in the country,” Carter said. “Everybody's good.

“You've just got to come in, stay focused and continue to work hard.”

Carter's Yellow Jackets are in the middle of their toughest stretch of the season. Tech started 0-3 in conference play, including a tough overtime loss against Virginia Tech last Saturday. Part of Tech's slow start in the ACC can be attributed to its youth. Carter is one of six freshmen for the Yellow Jackets. Tech's top two scorers are freshmen.

“Everybody's coming and doing the same thing, everybody's trying to work hard and trying to be prepared and ready to play,” Carter said. “There's just a focus you've got to have to be able to do it. Everybody can't come in and do it right away.”

Carter has shown he could contribute immediately in his first collegiate season. Along with his impressive point and rebounding totals, Carter has recorded 11 blocks, 11 steals and 16 assists. Carter is shooting .436 from the field and .659 from the free throw line.
