THOMASVILLE —
After two disheartening defeats in the first two days of the Holiday Hoopfest, the Cairo Syrupmaids needed a confidence boost.
They got one Saturday morning against rival Bainbridge.
The Syrupmaids (3-9) outscored the Lady Bearcats 21-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 48-42 victory on the final day of Thomasville High’s annual basketball tournament.
A day after blowing a 13-point second-half lead, Cairo was the team rallying on Saturday. Bainbridge held a 32-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter. But the Syrupmaids responded, highlighted by defensive pressure. Daneesha Edwards picked off a pass that resulted in a layup. Arianna Pate followed with a steal and another two points to cut Bainbridge’s lead to 32-31.
Edwards later recorded another steal and field goal that gave the Syrupmaids a 39-38 advantage.
“I’m proud of the kids, they battled back,” Cairo coach Lucy Baker said.
