Facing the giants

THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central's done it before.

Why can't the Yellow Jackets dethrone another No. 1 team tonight?

That's the question Central coach Bill Shaver posed to his team.

“That's kind of what I told them in the locker room. I said, 'Guys, we went into Statesboro (last year) with nobody in the state expected you to win. They were undefeated and unchallenged and you went to Statesboro and beat them. Why not try to do the same thing there at Northside?'” said Shaver, whose team will play top-ranked Northside-Warner Robins tonight in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs.

“Northside's a lot more talented than Statesboro. It's a completely different style of team. They're a lot more talented, definitely on defense, than what Statesboro was.”

Much like Northside is perceived to be this year, Statesboro was supposed to be invincible. It was 10-0 and champs of Region 2-AAAA. That didn't matter to the Yellow Jackets who emerged 31-28 winners, thanks to a 24-yard field goal by Gavin Wilson in double overtime.

“That was as big a challenge as we had to that point,” Central offensive line coach Bill Wilhelm said. “For them to step up and take the gameplan that we had and execute it, even though we went into overtime, the game wasn't even that close. I thought we did a great job of shutting them down and taking control of the game.

“Some of the other teams could have gone up there and said, 'They're a No. 1 seed. There's no way we can beat them.'”
