TU golfers finishe 12th
Thomas University’s women's golf team, ranked 18th in the NAIA, finished 12th of 15 entries in the Eagle Invitational, played at the Pelican Bay Country Club in Daytona Beach, Fla., over the weekend.
The Lady Night Hawks shot a 720 (360-360) overall in two rounds . Freshman Sara Engsig finished tied for 20th overall with a 168 (88-80). Fellow freshman Jessica Macphee also broke the top 50, finishing 43rd overall with a 177 (88-89).
Thomas University will travel to the Wilmington Island Country Club in Savannah on March 29 to open up play in the SCAD Invitational.
TU softball splits pair
Thomas University (8-20) split two games in its last day of participation in the Orange Beach Sotball Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala., on Sunday.
The Night Hawks opened their last day with a 12-11 victory over the Louisiana State University-Alexandria Generals (2-17). Senior Kenna Hickman had three hits, including a home run. Junior Brook Brown had three hits and freshman Alyssa Bork two hits, including a homer.
Senior pitcher Courtney Scruggs (4-7) picked up the win on the mound.
In game two, NAIA No. 6 William Carey University (14-5) dominated TU in a 14-3 run rule victory. Freshman pitcher Ashley Werschmidt (2-4) took the loss. Senior Jordan Thomas hit a solo home run.
After more than a month on the road, TU will return home on Friday to host Spring Hill College (4 p.m.) and LSU-Alexandria (8P p.m.). At 6 p.m., Spring Hill and and LSU-Alexandria will face off.
All games will be played at Remington Park. The three teams will have another round robin on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday's games will be played at Armory Field.
Indiana Tech averts sweep by TU
The visiting Indiana Institute of Technology Warriors (6-10) avoided a series sweep on Sunday by hammering the Night Hawks (18-8), 13-2 in a seven-inning run rule victory on Sunday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Leading 3-1 IIT used a seven-run fourth inning to take control of the game. It tacked on three more in the seventh and then held TU to only one run for the seven-inning run rule victory.
Senior catcher Rick Howroyd had two hits and drove in a run. He is now tied for the team lead in RBIs (22) with senior right fielder Drew Johnson. Sophomore starting pitcher Kurtis Mancauskas (3-2) took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on nine hits in only 3-2/3 innings.
TU will look to bounce back today when its welcomes Albany State University to Varnedoe Stadium for a single game at 4 p.m.
