Coming off a 2-9 season, Brookwood showed in its season opener last week it has improved. The Warriors are now eyeing a win. They’ll get their chance Friday when they travel to Albany to face Sherwood Christian.
“We’ve made huge strides to where we are now and where we were 12 months ago,” said Brookwood coach Robert East, whose GISA Class AA team lost to Class AAA Southland 27-20 last week. “I think anyone that’s even a casual observer would agree it’s night and day. We simply made mistakes last Friday night that you can’t make and win ball games. Out of the 30 or 40 mistakes you see in an average high school football game, if we don’t make one of those mistakes, we would have come away with a win.”
Brookwood has a chance to rectify those mistakes tonight against a Sherwood team coming off a stinging loss as well. The Eagles were grounded last week 28-6 by Deerfield-Windsor. That’s not indicative though of the talent on the Eagles team, however.
“Sherwood’s got a lot of talent. They’ve got speed. They’ve got size. It’s a formidable opponent,” East said.
“I scheduled early on in the season to make us better. I’d like to get wins but the most important thing is to get better very week.”
Brookwood hasn’t notched a win since Oct. 9 when it defeated Maclay, Fla. 21-7. The drought has not taken away the excitement from the Warriors, though.
“We’re continuing to work hard,” East said.
“These kids are among the hardest working I’ve ever had the privilege of being with.”
